Obituary

Sherman Wilson Sr.
February 21, 1945 ~ October 13 2023

Here is a story of an ordinary man. A jazz-loving Curtis Mayfield admiring western movie extraordinaire father and grandfather.

I was born on the 52nd day of 1945; if you're reading this, I would have lived 28,723 days.

My name is Sherman Wilson Sr. This is my story. It's not an extraordinary or compelling story, just about a family man who came from a big family and navigated his way from the Jim Crow South of segregation to the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado; more about that later.

I was the 13th biological child born to the union of Aldrich Wilson and Fannie Mae Wilson. It was late winter in Calhoun County, Alabama, on a Wednesday, the 21st of February. In those days, a big family was idyllic to work the land. Yet, most of all, it was the foundation of love. My brothers and sisters were Willie Clyde, Willie Francis, Ernest, John T, Curtis, Mary, Rose, Betty, Ada, Jean Aldrich, and Ruth. After I was born, my mother and father adopted Tommy, and we were a big, happy family. You wouldn't know I came from a big family by how I lived my life. One might say I'm a loner; I stay to myself, and coming from a big family, there was always commotion and ruckus. Therefore, solitude was a benefit.

Living in rural Alabama was the education itself; I graduated from Inkster High School.

As I mentioned, I worked my way to the Mile High city of Denver, Colorado; I became a father first to a son we named Cleophus. I fell in love with a sweet lady and married her, Jamie B Wilson, and to our union, two more children were born: Sherman Junior and Aimee Renee.

Off and on, I worked in warehouses as a laborer in summer's heat and winter's cold. For the most part, you could find me fishing, listening to smooth and soulful jazz, and my go-to, Curtis Mayfield. My favorite song was Miss. Martha. Living in Denver was quintessence as well because I love sports. Denver has all five major sports teams. I witnessed the Denver Broncos winning three Super Bowls. The Colorado Avalanche won 3 Stanley Cups. Then, this year, the Denver Nuggets brought home the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy. I watch baseball and would love to have seen the Colorado Rockies when the World Series. It's just not meant to be. I really enjoyed watching sports. Then Tiger Wood introduced me to golf, and I was even hooked watching it.

I enjoyed television westerns. I have even dressed up from time to time as an old cowboy. My favorite western, "My Name Is Nobody," is a classic, and then, from 2012 to 2017, I started watching Longmire. Well, as I mentioned, I like being alone. Enough about me for now: I said I'm a loner early on. I would have lived 78 years, seven months, and 22 days at the time of this writing. In my opinion, that's a full life.

My existence will be reminisced in the hearts and minds of those who valued my memory.

My children Cleophus, Sherman Junior, and Aimee Renee. My sister Rose. My grandchildren, a host of nephews, and nieces, and other relations.
