Obituary

David Nereson, 74, a long-time Denver resident, died Friday, May 10, 2024 after a ten-year battle with Parkinson's disease.

David Nereson was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico. His mother was an esteemed teacher and educator, working in the Los Alamos school system for over fifty years. His father was a nuclear physicist that worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory on the Manhattan Project from 1942. While he was very young, David was quickly recognized for his talented musical abilities, playing both the cello and piano. David was the "first chair" cellist for much of the time while he played in the Los Alamos High School (LAHS) symphony orchestra. His other passion was participating in the high school drama club called "The Olions". David was the "stage manager" for many highly successful LAHS theatre productions from 1964-1967. Additionally, David loved to travel, enjoying many of the foreign countries and different cultures his parents took him too while he was a teenager. While growing up in Los Alamos, David also loved riding the train every summer to visit his many relatives who lived in New York City.

After graduating high school in June of 1967, David attended the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He earned a Bachelor of Arts on Aug 4th, 1972, majoring in music, with a minor in German. After graduating from UNM, David worked various construction projects in Albuquerque from 1972 until 1976, and then he relocated to Denver in 1977.

Upon arriving in Denver, David earned money as a "jazz musician", playing piano for several musical groups. David's specialties included playing "ragtime and boogie-woogie" for his audience at many entertainment locations throughout Denver. David had a perfect musical "ear", and he decided to pursue his passion of becoming a piano tuning technician in the early 1980's. He attended a formal piano tuning technician school in Boston, MA, in 1983. After earning his credentials, David quickly became one of the most accomplished and highly recognized piano technicians in the City of Denver. Members of the Denver Piano Technician Guild recognized David as the "technical expert" on a variety of piano tuning topics. David was sought out by churches, elementary, middle and high schools, local universities and accomplished Denver pianists as the "go-to-guy" when it came to having their piano professionally tuned. David tuned pianos in the Denver and surrounding area for the next 40 years. David also taught cello to various students during his tenure in Denver, and he was a member of a small group of musicians that would practice regularly together.

David's other passions included bike-riding, hiking, cross-country skiing, and model railroading. He also was responsible for much of the genealogy research surrounding the Nereson family history dating back to when our ancestors first arrived in America from Norway. David was preceded in death by a sister named Christina, and a brother named Brian. He is survived by his brother Kenny of San Antonio, Texas, three nephews, and one niece.
