The Optimists

November 03, 1955, ~ December 14, 1960

It is Sunday afternoon the Denver Bronco game is on. The Broncos have fallen behind yet still cheering them on vigorously as she's cooking a meal for her family and friends.

Celestine is telling jokes to lighten up the atmosphere as she keeps repeating the Broncos can come back, the Broncos can come back, the Broncos can come back, holding out hope that her team will pull off a victory.  As her favorite team is rebuilding back to their glory days when they were winning Super Bowls, Celestine would say, "Rome wasn't built in a day."

Snow is on the ground, and the temperature is cool. It's mid-fall in Denver, Colorado.

It's a Thursday, and John Hicks is pacing back and forth as Ruth is experiencing labor pains; they're expecting a child. Will it be a boy? Will it be a girl? Neither one knows nor cares; they just yearn for a healthy child.

The appointed time has arrived, and birth is now given to a beautiful girl child named Celestine Alice, a name that means heavenly.

Educated in Denver Public Schools, Celestine attended Lake Jr. High School and West High School. She furthered her education and received her associate degree at the Community college of Denver.

Known for her effervescent and benevolence, Celestine could be found always helping others giving from her heart, whether meals, clothes, or shelter. She would give freely of her time and of herself.

Celestine wasn't one to play the victim, for she would persevere through any challenge and always knew that there was a rainbow after the rain in the silver lining around every cloud, and the sun will always shine.

"You can never love someone as much as you will miss them."

Celestine watched her beloved Broncos beat the Detroit Lions on Sunday, December the 12th of 2001, and then her time had come. The play clock had ticked down to zero; her last meal had been prepared, and it was time for her to rest. She closed her eyes on Tuesday, December the 14th of 2021, as she celebrated her victory in life.

Celestine's life will echo through eternity in the lives of those she loved and who loved her.

Her children, Christie Hicks, and Roseanna Hicks. She has 6 grandchildren Marvin King Jr. Mah'kaila, King Jayda King Justine Tipton Jordan Rhea, and Makial King. Plus, host other relatives and friends.

I Never Saw Your Wings

How is it that I never saw your wings
when you were here with me?
When you closed your eyes and soared
to the Heavens I could hear the
faint flutter of you wings as you left.
Your body no longer on this side
your spirit here eternally I see your halo shine.
I close my eyes and see the multi-colored wings
surround me in my saddest moments and my happiest times.
Mother my angel God has given you your assignment
always my mother forever my angel.
You fly into my dreams and when I am asleep
I feel your wings brush against my face wiping away
the tears I shed since I can no longer hold
you in my arms but in my heart.
You earned those wings dear mother
and you will always be me angel eternal.
