Virginia Mercedes
Plummer
January 6, 1929 – November 30, 2021
Virginia Plummer
Virginia Plummer was born in San Jose Costa Rica in 1929. Orphaned at a young age, she was adopted by a family and lived in the Cartago province of Costa Rica until she set off to attend convent school. When she was 18, her father sent her to live with the Costa Rican Consul in Denver. Upon arriving in Colorado, she sought freedom and independence, and went through the local phonebook calling every number and speaking the only English she knew at the time: "No speak English, can babysit." She eventually landed several baby-sitting jobs, learning English as she went along. Always the sojourner, when she saved enough money, she set out to visit San Diego, California, where she met her soon-to-be-husband, Lyle Plummer, a sailor in the US Navy. The two married in 1960, and had their first child, Thomas Plummer. The couple relocated to Aurora, Colorado, where Virginia gave birth to two daughters, Kathleen and Gail. She divorced Lyle in 1977, and shortly after began working in Central Supply at Rose Medical Center, where she was beloved by doctors and staff alike for 25 years. Here, she met Guadalupe Rodriguez, whom she remained lifelong friends with for over 20 years until he passed in 2016.
Arriving as an immigrant to the United States with no money to her name, and no knowledge of English, she carved a life for herself and her family through her own stout and dedicated hard work. She is remembered as a kind and genuine soul, someone who made friends everywhere she went, someone who was always willing to step up for her family and loved ones whenever they needed, and as someone who forever marched to the beat of her own drum.
She is survived by her three wonderful children Thomas, Kathy, and Gail, her beloved son-in-law Matthew Davis, and her three grandsons Dominic, Evan, and Maxwell, whom she adored, as well as countless friends and loved ones she made along the way.
May she Rest in Peace.
Safely Home
I am home in heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright.
There is a perfect joy and beauty
in this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
safely home in heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh, but Jesus' love illuminated
Every dark and fearful glade.
And He came Himself to meet me
in the way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely,
for I love you dearly still.
Try to look beyond death's shadows;
Pray to trust our Father's will.
There is work still waiting for you,
so you must not idly stand.
Do it now, while life remaineth;
you shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting;
Oh, the joy to see you come!
