Nolan Robert Kayhill
October 7, 1946 ~ April 05, 2024
This is the story of an authentic Christian, Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Brother Nolan Robert Kayhill.
Born in the early fall of 1946 in Emporia, Kansas, the firstborn of identical twin sons to the late Dolan Merril and Laverne Doris Kayhill. The family moved to Topeka, Kansas, where Nolan, along with his siblings Dolan, Jay, and Sharon, were educated in the Topeka School district at Clay Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High School, and graduated from Topeka High School, where he and his twin brother Dolan ran track and won several awards. While in junior high school, Nolan confessed his life to Christ, joining Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and later transferring to Shiloh Baptist Church.
During high school, Nolan worked part-time in restaurants and for his dad at the Shoeshine parlor. Both Nolan and Dolan developed the prowess to make shoes shine bright and brilliantly, which they continued through their adult life which they were known for being sharp dressers with well-polished shoes. Nolan developed a steady work ethic at a young age that would follow him throughout his life.
Once his primary education had been completed, Nolan entered the workforce, starting as a copy production clerk in the file room at the Capitol building. After a few years, he relocated to Denver, CO, where his first major job was working on the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel. On October 23, 1967, Nolan enlisted in the United States Navy. His tour of duty took him to several Naval Bases, starting in San Diego, CA., Corpus Christi, TX, and Midway Island. Nolan served on the USS Constellation as a Seaman apprentice where he performed multiple duties including aircraft landing and maintenance. He was a proud Vietnam veteran. Later, returning to Denver, Colorado. This was a pinnacle moment. Nolan married Mildred. This union was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kesha. Although the union ceased, their shared love and partnership will live on through Kesha Kayhill. Nolan's dedication to his family was unwavering, and every moment he spent with them was cherished, building lasting memories. From a young age, family was always a crucial thread connecting moments of love, support, and treasured memories. Staying true to his Kingdom journey, Nolan joined Zion Baptist Church, participating in Sunday School, Usher Board, Transportation, Media, Children Commission, and on annual Men's Day committees. Nolan's civilian employment life was marked by his dedication and hard work. He worked for the Empire Savings Bank and Gates Rubber Co. In June of 1982, he began working for the government at the Veterans Hospital, a role he held with pride and commitment until he retired on January 3, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication.
Nolan discovered love once more and married Alesia in 2016. In 2017, Nolan and Alesia moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma, to be near his twin brother. There, they joined Rayfield Baptist Church. Nolan's joy for life was evident in his hobbies and interests. He enjoyed traveling, attending old-school R&B concerts, and deeply loved gospel music. His love for sports, especially the Kansas City Chiefs Football team, was infectious, and he would often broadcast, "What about them Chiefs."
In the early hours of April 5th, 2024, Nolan drew his last breath, knowing that being absent from his human body means being present with God. As he crossed that majestic river, there to meet him were Jesus Christ and his parents, father, Dolan Merril Kayhill, and mother, Laferne Doris Kayhill, sisters Tricia Bradford and Sharon Cushinberry, his brother Jay Kayhill.
Nolan's life will reverberate through all eternity in the lives of those he left behind. His wife, Alesia, daughter Kesha Kayhill-Taylor (Ron), stepdaughter LaTasha Mitchell (Troy), his twin brother Dolan Kayhill (Janice), sister Virgina Bailey, grandchildren Ronald and Leila (Kesha), Terrell, DaMont, Nia (LaTasha). Nolan is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and two living aunts, Audrie Groves McConnell and Arlene Groves Tucker. And God children
Until We Meet Again
Those special memories of you will always bring a smile.
If only I could have you back for just a little while.
Then we could sit and talk again, just like we use to do.
You always meant so very much and always will too.
The fact that you're no longer here will always cause me pain, but you're forever in my heart until we meet again.
