Fredrick Jack Huff was born 3/26/1944 in Prague, Oklahoma to Fredrick Noel and Linnie Mae Huff.
He is survived by his daughter Sheri Huff and Tim Ellis, grandson Alexander Jack Ellis, brother Ronnie and Donna Huff, cousin Alice White-Huff, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick Noel Huff and Linnie Mae Huff, Sisters Helen Joan Pruitt, Patsy Nadine Coggins and Ronald Coggins, and Brother Jimmie Huff. Freddie will be laid to rest with his parents and brother at Prague Cemetery in Prague, Oklahoma.
Freddie graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 1962 and participated in the Mathematics Club. He attended South Nazarene University. He joined the US Army and served as a 44E20 Machinist as he fought during the Vietnam War on the front lines. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 and 2 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, and Sharpshooter Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar. He participated in 3 campaigns during his service in Vietnam. His active duty stemmed from May 7, 1965 to April 29, 1967. After Vietnam, he was a preacher and spoke to large congregations. He was a skilled machinist in his trade. Freddie was known as a loving father and brother. He was quite thoughtful and generous with what he was able to give. He was known to jump and ride on trains across the country. He traveled for many years according to the weather. He attended Portland Avenue Pentecostal Holiness Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
His internal battles continued throughout his life until his death. He never shared with family that he earned the Sharpshooter Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar. He suffered significant PTSD. He never utilized his veteran benefits, although he did attempt to file a request for his DD-214 in Trinidad, Colorado on 9/10/2014. There was no indication he received it, and he never applied for benefits.
Freddie was a Veteran Doe whose body was found in Trinidad, Colorado on 9/15/2019 in a dilapidated shed. His remains were naked, skeletal, mummified and weighing 45lbs. The cause of death was unknown. Due to discrepancies in his previously recorded height and the height of his remains, a DNA analysis was completed and positive identification was made through Paleo-DNA Laboratory at Lakehead University located 1294 Balmoral Street, Suite 300 Thunder Bay, Ontario,
Canada, P7B 5Z5.
Special recognition is going to Derek Navarette, Sheriff of Las Animas County Sheriff Department, Rey Santistevan UnderSheriff at Las Animas County Sheriff Department, and Detective Phil Sergeant Martin with the Las Animas County Sheriff Department. Detective Martin fed Freddie when he was hungry, and made sure his first name was recorded. This assisted in the identification of his remains. Positive identification would not be possible without the detective's diligence. Fred was labeled a peaceful man by law enforcement, and was never known to be drunk or high.
Many loving good people of Trinidad, Colorado who loved, fed, and clothed Freddie. Many people in this community kept him alive.
